KEOWN: IBRAHIMOVIC COULD FALL NEXT SEASON
Soccer Pundit Martin Keown opines that Swede striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic could turn a fallen giant next year.
The former Barcelona, AC Milan and PSG striker scored a last gasp penalty as Man United forced a draw at Old Trafford against Everton.
United have relied solely on the striker for goals this season. While he has netted 27 times already, the club has struggled without him. Keown insists that Ibrahimovic would struggle to deliver the goods next year if the player decides to continue.
“It was very predictable. You look at Ibrahimovic, he’s 35 and he looked it tonight [against Everton]. He’s been suspended for the last couple of games and he didn’t pick up to the pace tonight. United have to go out and sign a striker in the summer,” the former Arsenal defender added.
Ibrahimovic signed for a year but he is yet to agree to a second year as there was the deal for an extension in the deal. Keown added that Zlatan could do a Wayne Rooney next year where he just gets to play sometimes as the pressure and requirements for his position would limit his impact.
United legend Rio Ferdinand chipped that Coach Jose Mourinho did not need to get another striker as there was Marcus Rashford. Keown argued that Rashford was not yet developed enough to lead the attack for the Red Devils. Ferdinand made a case for the Three Lions youngster to be played in his best role and not out wide.
Rooney decided to continue despite the speculations that trailed his poor form. He has barely achieved anything for the club this season bar his crucial equalizer that helped become the all-time goalscorer for the club. On the international scene, he has been neglected as well. Manager Gareth Southgate insists that the player still has a chance in the team though.
