The former star of Manchester United and of the England national football team, Bobby Charlton managed to score 49 goals during his playing career for his national side and this is a record which has stayed alive for over40 years but it might be broken within the next few months as Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney is edging closer.

Wayne Rooney’s latest goal for England was scored on June 14 of 2015 as he helped his national team in defeating Slovenia during a match which concluded with a final scoreboard of 3-2 as England came out on top and it was Wayne Rooney who scored the last goal of the game.

This goal of Wayne Rooney was his 48th for the English national side and now Rooney is only 1 goal away from reaching Bobby Charlton’s record of 49 goals and Wayne Rooney knows that he will be able to reach and surpass that record.

Wayne Rooney might be able to break the record of Bobby Charlton in a few months in September as England has to face San Marino and this is the perfect chance for the captain of Manchester United to make his mark on the history books of England.

Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney said how proud he was in closing in on the record of Bobby Charlton as he said: “I am proud to be within a goal of equaling Sir Bobby’s record. It is something I will look back on at the end of my career and be extremely proud of. It’s stood for 45 years. Many players have had a go and tried to do and not done it. To be within a goal, at 29 with a few good years in me, I’m sure it will happen.’’

Michael Owen is a former English forward who came close in reaching the record of Bobby Charlton but Owen just couldn’t reach the record as he was a little short after only able to score 40 goals for England however, all signs are pointing towards Rooney being the man who is going to break the record of Charlton and it might be accomplished in September when England play against San Marino.
