Derby County have now lost two games on the bounce in the English Championship after they were beaten at home by Bristol City at the weekend. Wayne Rooney and his players had already known their status for next season ahead of the Bristol City game on Saturday. Their relegation to League One was confirmed penultimate weekend after the 1-0 defeat at London team Queens Park Rangers with ten men. The Rams paid dearly for a 21-point deficit handed out to the club in the opening weeks of the season. The Rams were punished for going into administration and also breaking EFL (English Football League) rules.

Wayne Rooney said earlier in the season that it would be his biggest achievement in football if he could keep Derby County in the English Championship. In the end, the Manchester United legend could not keep them in the Championship. For now Wayne Rooney will stay at Derby County as they try to reclaim their place in the Championship via the League One campaign next season.

It has been a wretched few years for Derby fans after they watched their team almost made the Premier League before they were beaten in the Championship playoff final by Aston Villa. Chelsea legend Frank Lampard was the Derby boss when they lost 2-1 to Villa in the playoff final in the summer of 2019.

The relegation picture in the Championship has already been decided with Peterborough United and Barnsley joining Derby in League One next season.

For Derby and the other two relegated teams, pride is left on the table ahead of the final few games of the season. Rooney and his players are on a two-match losing run and they would be hoping to put that to a stop when they face hosts Blackpool in the coming weekend before taking on Cardiff City at home in their final game in the Championship for the foreseeable future.
