Gio Reyna hopeful of playing with Christian Pulisic for USA
Borussia Dortmund attacker Gio Reyna has revealed that he has been in contact with Christian Pulisic and he hopes to present the United States alongside the Chelsea attacker. Reyna only made his debut for Dortmund after the winter break but he has already made a decent impression from 10 appearances.
Each one of those have come off the bench but he has nonetheless caught the eye of United States boss Gregg Berhalter, who is expected to hand him a maiden call-up to the senior squad. Speaking to Bundesliga.com, the 17-year-old revealed that he has been interacting with compatriot Pulisic, who built his reputation with Dortmund.
He told: “I’m in touch with Christian. We write on text or Instagram every now and then, but I just try to be my own person. Yes, what he did in Germany was amazing, and it’s cool to be compared to him as he’s doing so well now in the Premier League. But I’m trying to create my own path, because we are different players. The way he created a path for Americans to come to Germany, and especially now in Dortmund for me, is really exciting. So yeah, he’s done a lot of great stuff, and hopefully I can play with him soon in the national team.”
Pulisic was signed by Chelsea from Dortmund in the winter of 2019 but he was loaned back to the German club for the rest of the campaign. His debut season with the Blues has been a mixed bag, considering he has been injured since the turn of the year with a nagging adductor problem. Prior to that, the attacker contributed six goals and three assists across all competitions and it remains to be seen whether he can make a comeback before the international break this month such that he can put himself into contention for USA duty.
