CHARLTON BACKS ROONEY
Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton has said that Chelsea can forget about signing Wayne Rooney in this transfer window. Chelsea have been actively pursuing the 27-year-old England international, who has placed himself on the transfer list since the end of last season.
Manager David Moyes has said on several occasions that he is not for sale, but Chelsea recently made a £ 20 million offer for the former Everton star. Rooney is still at the peak of his powers, but the presence of Robin van Persie is thought to have unsettled him ahead of the new campaign.
Rooney played the second role to the Dutchman for most of last season and he is keen to avoid a repeat of the same. He is also extremely excited about the prospect of playing under José Mourinho, who rates him very highly as a striker. After almost a decade of service at Old Trafford, Rooney is thought to be contemplating the prospect of entertaining a new challenge in his career. Charlton, though, has said that there is no chance that United will allow Rooney to join Chelsea.
The West London outfit are yet to come with a second offer for the player after their initial bid was rejected. Rooney is only 52 goals away from matching Charlton’s record of 249 goals.
“Wayne Rooney is a Manchester United player and I think that he will continue to be a Manchester United player. We are not silly enough to make any rash decisions. I don’t like losing really good players and he is a really, really good player. I was hoping one day that he might score as many goals as I had and that would have been really nice if it was at our club – and I’m still thinking that way,” said Charlton.
